FAA Part 135 Air Carrier Certification

Welcome

CFI Initial Practical Text

This website focuses on skills and tasks that are needed but are often missed, resulting in unsatisfactory performance. The CFI practical test focuses on presenting a lesson and demonstrating understanding of the elements so the pilot can learn and performae in accordance with the airman certification standards. Keep in mind that the material that you download from the Web may be outdated, incomplete, and incorrect.

Key Elements: You must be prepared. Use visual references; be clear and concise; and, be complete and organized. Key elements are the few items unique to the task that must be mastered by the student. As a CFI, you must be able to articulate and be sure the student knows what must be done for a successful outcome.

White Board: Bad news if you are planning on using a white board to teach each task. It is inefficient and ineffective. Most CFI applicants draw poorly and miss key items. It results in a poor learning experience. It will result in an oral that is greater than 8 hours. PowerPoint, or equivalent, is a better solution. Additionally, a handout with all the items covered is something the student can use.

Long Monologue: Students and DPE's do not like a long monologue. Avoid using the ACS as an outline to tell me everything you know about the elements in a task. I will quietly listen and try to check off all the items that need to be covered, if I stay awake. Avoid reading out loud your lesson plan and showing no visual aids or slides. If you use PowerPoint, or equivalent, avoid reading your slides. You need to engage the student or DPE.

Be Clear, Concise, Complete, and Organized!: How do you know they know?
